Ecumenical family response to the PCT election Message

A. PCT PARTNER CHURCHES

Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK)

2016-01-22

Dear Rev. Lyim Hong-Tiong,

Warm greetings from the Presbyterian Church of Korea!

I heartily congratulate the people of Taiwan with regard to the result of Presidential and Legislative Election on January 16, 2016. I would like to express my warm gratitude for your kind sharing of the good news as well.

It is quite inspiring that the Taiwanese people have chosen Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen as their president and given most of the seats to the Democratic Progressive Party. I have been especially inspired by the news that the young generation of Taiwan has taken significant roles in the process of democratization. I rejoice in one accord with the people and will be vigorously supporting the PCT's courageous endeavor to enhance people's life in terms of human rights and to advocate the independence of the nation.

I hope that the PCK and PCT would be standing firmly in strong solidarity with Hope for the Reign of God which drives unrighteous earthly powers out and brings the Just Peace into the vulnerable world, in the midst of complex and multi-faceted situation with which East Asian countries have encountered.

May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be always with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan as well as the people of God who cry out for God's intervention in their daily lives!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Dr. Hong Jung Lee
General Secretary
Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK)

The Presbyterian Church of Wales

2016-01-22

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

It is with great joy that I send you this message of support and encouragement on behalf of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, following the Presidential and Legislative Elections in Taiwan on 16 Jan 20 16. We rejoice that the process ran smoothly and that the transition of power was achieved without incident and that so many young people especially participated in the elections as campaigners and candidates.

We congratulate the new president, Dr Tsai Ing-Wen, on her election and wish her well for the future government of Taiwan. It is encouraging to learn of Dr Tsai's pledge that the Presidency will be transparent and accountable, and we pray for all attempts to ensure co-operation with other political parties in order to secure a bright future for the people of Taiwan.

We are also aware of the positive and prophetic role The Presbyterian Church of Taiwan has had in the life of the country, and applaud once more its unyielding commitment to mercy and justice over so many years.

May God richly bless the ministry of the Church and its ongoing witness to the Kingdom in the light of the Gospel.

Yours in Christ,
Rev Dr Elwyn Richards
Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCW

Moderator, 60th General Assembly

Rev. Lyim Hong-Tiong
General Secretary

Presbyterian Church in Taiwan
3, Lane 269,Roosevelt Road Sec. 3
Taipei 10647 TAIWAN

Dear Rev. Tin and Rev. Lyim,

Your friends in The Presbyterian Church in Canada join with you in offering thanksgiving to God for the peaceful and democratic elections that recently took place in Taiwan. We understand the significance of these elections, and will pray for President Tsai Ing-Wen as she confronts the many challenges that are the reality in Taiwan now.

The role of any church in the political arena, is to bear witness to the truth, and to encourage justice and compassion. The words of the prophet Micah remain as true now as they were 2,700 years ago; when he urged the people “to love mercy, seek justice and walk humbly with God”. The PCT has chosen a beautiful passage from the Scriptures to guide you in your relationship with government.

We will pray for the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and for all the leadership, that you will be given wisdom, courage and patience as you faithfully serve Jesus Christ in word and deed.

Warmest Christian greetings!

Ping-an, Peace,

Glynis Williams
Associate Secretary for International Ministries

Dear Carys,

Thank you for the heart-warming words.

Yesterday I had the privilege of preaching at Rev. Lee Meng-Jer’s Tokyo Taiwanese Church. In this sense it was a very special Sunday.

The number of attendees seemed to be much smaller than usual due to the elections (as the rest went back to Taiwan), but the Lord allowed me to have a good fellowship after the worship service. I felt the Lord loved Taiwan and its Christians very much during the week-end.

Blessings to you as you serve the Lord at the PCT!

Sincerely in Christ,

Dear Rev. Lyim,

Very glad to hear that Taiwanese people have made this momentous decision of electing a Woman PresidentDr. Tsai Ing-Wen “Siao-Ing. Congratulations. We pray that Madame President, Vice President Chen and Taiwan legislative members will be good leaders and will keep the welfare of the Taiwanese people at heart. It is indeed good to know that the honorable Vice-President has acknowledged the contributions of the Catholic and Protestant Churches and Missionaries. It is a good and positive beginning, and a foundation on which the Taiwanese churches can build a good working relationship. Best wishes from all of us at CCA.

Hello Rev. Lyim,

Happy New Year to you too! Apologies for the delay in responding but we’ve been in the US for my nephew’s wedding and now in catch up mode.

Also, have followed the Presidential Elections and I’m sure there will be some pleasure in Dr Tsai’s election. I met her a couple of times through PCT most recently in Kaoshiung last June. I sent her congratulations through the DPP website. Hope they reached her. Seems that there will be interesting times for your new President and all of you.

All the best to everyone in the PCT office and, of course, yourself.

Thanks so much. Made me a little "homesick" for Taiwan.

Though I do not know either of the winners, I will certainly be praying for them as they lead Taiwan.

Take care and please assure the leaders of the PCT that prayers are being offered for them, their families and for their leadership of the church there.

21 January 2016

Dear Rev. Lyim,

I hope that 2016 will be a good happy and blessed one for you and for the PCT.

We were overjoyed to learn the results of the election I wrote to Shou Hwei in Manchester to give our congratulations. Now having the actual results it is even better news as we worried that there would be opposition but with such a clear majority that is unlikely, at least within Taiwan.

After the invitation to the 150th anniversary came I was excited as I had attended the 100th but as I received it too late to apply and in any case my hip would have not liked the journey (I was hit by a car four years ago which broke my hip and it is still not good and was very sore when the invitation came.). I did think of attending the later celebration in September but after realising how hot and humid it would be at that time of year and that the celebrations would all be in Taiwanese I decided not to. It would be lovely to see my friends particularly those on the East Coast. If my hip improves I might go.

The confession of faith of the PCT is mentioned in the report would you please send me an English copy of it as I am working on a possible confession.

Dear Rev. Lyim

Do you have your feet on the earth yet! What an exciting week this has been! Thanks for sending the links re; the election. I am sending them on to Ruth who is caught up in the excitement as well.

Please pass my greetings on to Joyce and Iap Bok-su, and to Cecilia. It was lovely to see all your photos on Facebook. Iap Bok-su must be over the moon these days. I remember how strongly he expressed himself when we were on the various tours in April.

It reminded me of how careful we had had to be during our time in Taiwan when we were still living under martial law. I will continue to pray for our new President , Vice-President and the new government, as well as the PCT , Love, Mh
